Dear Glenn, as we discussed, here is the OCC memo & notice for your transit list-serve.
Thanks for your guidance last night.
Love and Peace, Jon
Dear Colleague,
The OCC Land Use and Transportation Committee will meet Monday, Aug. 27, 6 pm, at UNITED CEREBRAL PALSY, Centre and Neville.
This is the usual 4th Monday, at 6. It will be at UCP. 4638 Centre Ave. We much appreciate UCP's subbing this summer while the Pitt Student Union is under reconstruction. There are several items on the agenda.
1) PAT will be at the Oakland Community Council membership meeting Monday, Sept. 10, 6 pm, at People's Oakland, 3433 Bates St. What questions and issues should we raise? Existing bus routes and the recent and threatened future cuts are already on the agenda. In particular, how might the 84-B make Oakland less dependent on the private automobile?
2) Light Rail in the East Corridor, from downtown through Oakland to Homestead or Braddock. Can there be s a consensus on a concept for the East Corridor?
In particular, should a line to Oakland run through the Hill (presumably underground) or somehow around the Hill? What does the Hill want? An e-mail on this subject has been sent to One Hill. Only with a broad consensus would it be possible to work with the regional planning process and the governmental leadership, and start to look for funding.
3) What's next on transit funding? We FINALLY won in Harrisburg. Now it seems that we have to fight locally to get the legislatively mandated 15% local share. Legislation to do this with an Allegheny County drink tax and a car rental tax is being drafted by County Councilman Bill Robinson, and will be considered together will the County's annual budget, probably in October or November.
4) What is the status on grocery shopping in Oakland? OCC is trying to work out some kind of cooperative effort including Oakland's wealth of ethnic groceries. (Please see the July OCC Newsletter.)
This might relate to the plans for a cooperative "Landslide Community Farm" on the unbuildable slopes aroung Beelan and Brenham streets overlooking Fifth Ave. (Please see the Post-Gazette, Aug.13, page B-1.)
5) What happened at the meeting on plans for a bicycle-safe Oakland, Aug. 7, and the meeting on pedestrian safety on the South Side Aug. 15?
Old business includes the repeated efforts to bring Code Enforcement to Oakland, and the inadequate legislation for access to the inside of rental housing.
Other old business includes the new bridge on the Boulevard of the Allies and the impact on Lawn St. and Ophelia St.
There are always zoning issues, including the proposed restaurant on Atwood St.
Love and Peace,
Jon Robison
